Community Health & Wellness (Bienestar)
Care rooted in community, dignity, and access
Our Understanding
Through our health and wellness programs, we seek to achieve true community bienestar, allowing our community to experience true wellness and freedom. We strive to thrive, not just survive.
We acknowledge the social roots of most community challenges. Even non-social factors, like COVID-19, bring enormous social impacts due to institutional racism. Addressing health conditions means acknowledging our community's everyday experiences and the systemic issues they face. Our mission is dual: address immediate needs and foster leadership for enduring change.
Why “Bienestar”? “Bienestar” means wellness and well-being. For us, wellness is more than healthcare. It includes housing, food, safety, community, language access, cultural connection, and the ability to navigate systems with dignity and support. Our program is built by community, for community.
How We Do This
Our work is carried out through culturally responsive, community-based support led by Spanish-speaking Community Health Workers. We provide accompaniment, resource navigation, and direct support, working alongside community members to help them navigate systems, access services, and address challenges in ways that feel accessible and grounded in trust.
Our Plan
We address health inequities through prevention, access, and culturally responsive care, supporting individuals and families in building healthier futures.

-
We work to address health inequities through prevention, access, and culturally responsive care, recognizing that long-term wellness begins with early support and consistent access to resources.
Our approach focuses on improving health outcomes by increasing access to care, strengthening health education, and supporting individuals in navigating healthcare systems with dignity and confidence.
We prioritize both immediate and long-term needs, ensuring that community members are supported not only in moments of crisis, but in building healthier and more stable futures.
This includes:
Expanding access to preventative care and health services
Supporting community-based health education and awareness
Assisting individuals in navigating healthcare systems and resources
Addressing barriers that limit access to consistent and equitable care
Expanding Access to Care
We work to ensure community members can access consistent and dignified healthcare by supporting connections to primary care providers, assisting with medical system navigation, and providing ongoing referrals and follow-up support.
We also support children and families by expanding access to healthcare coverage, assisting with vaccinations, and addressing barriers such as language, transportation, and administrative challenges.
-
We understand that well-being extends beyond physical health, shaped by social, emotional, and economic conditions that impact daily life. Our work centers community care by providing support systems that respond to immediate challenges while also strengthening long-term resilience.
The Landscape of Poverty
The effects of poverty deeply impact not only physical well-being, but also emotional and spiritual health. Within our community, housing and food instability are major challenges, affecting both immigrants and non-immigrants. Many individuals face unsafe living conditions or exploitative housing situations.
Challenges of Access
A significant portion of our community is excluded from government assistance, limiting access to essential resources such as food, housing, and basic support systems.
In response, we work to bridge these gaps through community knowledge, direct support, and resourcefulness, while also working toward long-term goals such as food sovereignty and sustainable systems of care.
Our Initiatives
Resource Connection:
Linking eligible individuals, especially those in mixed-status households, to essential food and housing resources. This includes enrollment in programs like WIC, SNAP, GA, and TANF, helping families access critical support systems that are often difficult to navigate.
Tenant Advocacy:
Supporting residents facing exploitative landlords, from navigating legal processes to providing courtroom accompaniment, ensuring community members are not alone in asserting their rights.
Bi-Weekly Mobile Pantry:
Organizing La Despensa Solidaria, our mobile pantry held every two weeks, providing culturally relevant food, salvaged goods, farm harvests, medicinal herbs, and essential supplies like diapers and toiletries to meet immediate community needs.
Crisis Intervention:
Offering rapid response during critical situations, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and immigration-related emergencies, providing immediate support and connection to resources during times of crisis.
-
Our community includes many young adults, including individuals navigating pregnancy and early parenthood. These caregivers play essential roles as providers, leaders, and anchors within their families and communities.
Their well-being is deeply connected to the health of future generations. By supporting them, we strengthen not only individual families, but the broader community as a whole.
We work to address disparities in maternal and child health by expanding access to care, education, and culturally responsive support systems. Our efforts focus on both immediate needs and long-term outcomes.
This includes:
Access to contraception and family planning education
Early, comprehensive, and dignified prenatal care
Developmental screenings and support for children
Stronger communication between community members and healthcare providers
Culturally grounded, community-driven care solutions
Shared learning spaces like La Red Matriarchal, where support and knowledge are built collectively
